Stew Cater (1952 – 2005)
Stew Cater joined the club at the end of the 1977/78 season and became a regular member of the Senior team, captaining the side to the clubs second championship win in 1980/81.
A highlight of his was teaming up with Ewen Chatfield for Wellington and routing the mighty West Indies at the Hutt Recreation Ground the same year. Stew took 4-35 and 3-54 in the respective innings and Wellington won by 6 wickets.
Stew was a loyal club member extending many years. He served on the management committee, was club selector and active in all aspects the club operations including fundraising.
He led by example, instilled confidence in players both young and old with his positive approach to the game.
In 2007, the Stew Cater Memorial Trophy was inaugurated in his memory, contested between Y7 Premier Junior teams of Johnsonville, Onslow, North City (Tawa) and Karori. The event was very competitive and played with fine spirit and sportsmanship.
The trophy will be contested annually to instil in our young cricketers these qualities which Stew demonstrated throughout his playing years.
